International Painting Triennial of the Carpathian Region – Silver Quadrangle 2018

Tenth edition of the project, realize by the Gallery of Contemporary Art in Przemysl since 1994,
in cooperation with partners in Poland and abroad.
The Triennial’s goal is to promote and document current trends in the area of contemporary painting, artists who are living in border regions of countries for whom the Carpathian culture and arts tradition is a reference to current problems – the voice of our generation.
We invite all the creators for whom 1m2 of paper or canvas is an intriguing challenge, and at the same time, the area / field of both the open artistic experiment and the classical forms of the message – truly free creation.

Artistic curator and author of the main theme / foundati in Triennale 2018 is Andras Kakoczki
critic and art historian (Hermann Otto Museum / Miskolci Galeria in Miskolc) Hungary.

The theme of the tenth edition of the Triennale:

Future of Europe / Unity in Diversity

 Conception

The Future of Europe “Unity in diversity” – Motto of the European Union

A European person respects those as well who don’t agree with him, because knows that the truth has many faces and it is always relative.” (Péter Popper (1933 – 2010) Hungarian writer, psychologist)

“They ask: what European values do I consider outstanding? I would say that is tact. I see it less arty than love, it contains observation, knowledge, empathy and that principle that do not do to others what you would not like yourself.” (György Konrád (1933 -) Hungarian writer, sociologist)

It’s said many times that the European culture is having a crisis, it is increasingly likely that cultural diversity will disappear due to the the European intellectuality and globalisation. It seems that internet dictate our life and only a few people are able to keep their optimism and faith in the future. Artistic and cultural activities are losing their uniqunes as well. The culture itself is globalising too, though there is a growing need for own, individualistic culture when things are not going on the right way, when the social network is tearing and there is a big temptation to isolate ourselves and not paying attention to others.

In this fine art concept we are asking questions of our living and cultural space, Europe and its future. And we are waiting the answers from the artists through their artworks.

Thus here are some sudden thoughts of Europe and its future:

From cultural anthropological point of view culture contains all the knowledge, values and norms of
a certain society, which ensure a community to remain and stay together. Briefly we could conclude that culture basically means the totality of intangible and material assets, created by a certain society.

The European culture is based on liberty and democracy. Its important positive specialities are the respect for women, the dignity of work, the recognition of accomplishment, the open-mindedness, the appreciation of artistic and historical heritage, the sacredness of human life and private property, and the collective respect for Christian principles. Its main feature is that it accepts and respects other cultures. Though it wasn’t always the same, marks the second half of the 20th century and our days.

The European culture owns a kind of unique unitiness which is made of colourfulness. At present the central political and social basis of Europe and the European Union are established on Nation States, which define common positions many times, but insist on their national specificities, languages and arts.

The identity and future of the European culture provide that kind of topic what we can observe in our daily life among the actual cultural, economic, existential and moral challenges.

Questions:
Does European culture exist and in the future, will it be? What does ‘Europe’ mean nowadays?
What will the word ‘Europe’ and the attributive ‘European” mean in the future?
What will it mean to be a European at all? What will happen with the European culture and Christian values?
What will mean the word itself, the continent, being a European, the European culture to an artist living in it, beyond geographical, political, social and ecological factors?
What are those principles which define Europe, the European culture and the Western mentality? What is the identity of the European culture built from and where is it heading to?

According to many, traditional values and customs are constantly exposed to offence thus they waver and fall into oblivion. Whether are we witnessing a necessary changing process to which we have to adjust to, or do we have to find our roots again and return to the bases?

Change has been always the own of the European culture, but how do artists see the survival of it, beyond what can be waited? Must the European culture survive our days at all or does it only need to live the present and with the knowledge of the past get prepared to the future?

This call is looking for answers in how different artists think of Europe and a unified colourfulness, and in the same time how they see in our globalised, many times standardized world the future of this significant, transboundary, longstanding culture.

There is a wide spectrum of answers.
